Where is the world going?? Who knows?! God does!! And He's preparing us right now to share His extreme grace and radical truth with that world in ways that connect and convict --- even as He is transforming us into the church that truly represents Christ. Picturing ourselves completely dependent on Him, vitally engaged with that world, joyfully moving on this mission, as the church that fulfills Christ's call at all costs ... is our vision. This Conference claims that future and clarifies this vision in the hope of inspiring the unshakable confidence and unrelenting commitment we need.

DC9 will focus on the great frontier of the future (already breaking in!) and the church's challenge to anticipate the openings --- which forces us to get honest with ourselves, discern the times, relinquish lesser priorities and trust His provision. Our two incredible keynote speakers will explain the Scripture and illustrate the coming Kingdom already at work in our world. The worship will compel our devotion. The conversations with other Christians from other places will encourage our hearts.

Doing Church 2009 Features

Michael Frost is Australian, founder of a strong missional community, and author of The Shaping of Things to Come: Innovation and Mission for the 21st Century (2003); Exiles: Living Missionally in a Post-Christian Culture (2005); and his most recent book, with Alan Hirsch, ReJesus: A Wild Messiah for a Missional Church (2008). Michael is hard-hitting in order to wake up churches to the urgency of the challenge that we face in an increasingly neo-pagan context. His insights will spring the church from its self-imposed confinement and unleash it on the world --- if leaders have the courage to accept the risks and take the leap.

David Kitely is a pastor of pastors and overseer of an international network of churches. He has served as Senior Pastor of Shiloh Christian Fellowship, a truly multi-ethnic church in Oakland, for 35 years. David's ministry is continually characterized as fresh, reality-based and cutting-edge. He speaks the truth with deep affection and a sharp sense of humor. His extensive travels instill a prophet's perspective on the Body of Christ and our big opportunities locally, in this region, and around the world.

Sara Groves is a soft-spoken, introspective, mother of three from Minnesota, who happens to be one of America's most beloved pop artists. "Tell Me What You Know," her latest album, is inspired by experiences in the flood-ravaged gulf coast of Louisiana, by encounters in post-genocidal Rwanda, and from testimonies of Southeast Asian sex trade survivors. Lessons learned on the value of long defeats and the defiance of hope in the face of insurmountable odds infuse her exuberant, insightful music. Sara will lead worship at DC9. Visit her website at Sara Groves.

Eddie Gibbs, from England and on the faculty at Fuller Seminary in Pasadena, is a veteran church growth expert who is focused on evangelizing nominal Christians, helping churches become evangelizing communities, revitalizing traditional denominations, and developing the church's response to modernity and postmodernity in becoming a missionary presence. His best-selling books include Church Next (2004) and Leadership Next (2007).

Lawrence Van Hook pastors in Oakland and teaches ethnic studies at Laney and Chabot Community Colleges. He will serve as our conference MC.
